As an alternative example, I live in a Hare Krishna community (in British Columbia, Canada) that is not managed as a commune. We all own our individual land (about 5 acres), have more independence and take major decisions democratically (which usually has to do with infrastructural maintenance and improvement). There are a set of loose rules by which we all agree to abide by. But, that's just how intentional communities function. Though, ours have a Hare Krishna flavor to it. :D

I'm not sure if you are fully aware of what he is saying here. He has obviously been told to moderate how he is talking (when Kate subtitles it as [muttering] ) but he starts to explain WHY his chickens are safe now. He is talking about the village used to contain single houses with many families in one and the crime rate would be much higher (stolen chickens) but because of the Hare Krishna people the houses are too expensive for that particular Hungarian ethnic group to remain in the village. He even starts to pronounce the word at 11:31 but stops himself. They even ask Kate and her friend in Hungarian if they understand what they are insinuating, but Kate either didn't understand this nuance of the language or decided not to subtitle it.
Converting? There's no ritual in Hinduism prescribed to convert people of other religions to Hinduism. If a Christian wants to become a Hindu then he doesn't need to give up going to church or praying to jesus, all he has to do is to give up the idea that Christianity is the only "true" religion and their God is the "true" God, such thinking gives rise to intolerance.

kate, a fascinating and revealing film. particularly in light of all the news lately about hungary's far right politics and nativist policies. thanks for sharing. a couple of points: individuals who join the hare krishna faith do have choices: they choose the faith, and then they have the option to leave the faith, without consequences, i presume. and re: your point about children not having the choice, that remains true in all cases, across the world, across time. for example, millions of children born in america's bible belt into families practicing evangelical christianity may be raised to be homophobic, or worse, anti science and anti reason. :)
This world badly needs Hare Krishna Movement in every part of the world not because to spread a religion but to make the world realize that the most important aspect of the life of a human being is nonviolence, unconditional love and compassion.
